Overview
On the basis of the core missions of the previous Ministry of Agriculture, now the Ministry of Labor and Skills in Ethiopia, Mizan Agricultural TVET College has been engaged in education, specifically Agricultural TVET College (outcome based training, conduct applied research, technology transfer and community service activities). The college has experiences in generating problem-solving research findings and technologies that have contributed much towards national and local development needs and priorities since its establishment in 2002. Over the last decade, it has been actively engaged in transfer of technologies to different stakeholders and communities. Due to its notable achievements in education, research and community engagement, Mizan Agricultural TVET College has been acknowledged as one of the outstanding colleges out of Agricultural TVET College in the Ministry of Agriculture Ethiopia in 2017.
Apart from this, the college is increasingly attracting the attention of international institutions and organizations for collaborative engagements. This is mainly due to the outstanding performances of its academic staff in development of grant winning project proposals. At present, Mizan Agricultural TVET College is running more than two collaborative projects with Africa Union/NEPAD and Dutch (PUM) partners. The projects are being carried out by setting up partnerships with two international organizations and seven national (governmental and non-governmental) organizations. The projects are basically engaged in capacity building, research, and technology transfer and community service.
The collaborative projects are playing an indispensable role in developing the capacity of Mizan Agricultural TVET College through human resource development, fulfillment of highly needed resources for teaching and research, and generating and transferring of appropriate technologies. Accordingly, Mizan Agricultural TVET College’s collaborative projects have trained on grant project writing for fund for 31 instructors, and Hone production and processing including bee hive making for 8 animal science instructors and three members of Tesfay Honey processing firm as partner of the college from PUM Netherland in short term training.
The other important components in the collaborative projects are the key roles they play in the execution of research and technology transfer. Most of the projects are engaged in conducting research in core areas of national development. On the other hand, the collaborative projects are helping the community through providing research-based technologies in various disciplines. They are also engaged in delivering tailor-made training to different stakeholders that include, teachers, agricultural professionals, farmers, women and youth. The training focuses on improving the knowledge, skills and attitude of the trainees so that they will be more productive, efficient and effective in their careers.
