Plant Science Department
Overview
The Department of Plant Science was established in 2002 to train input based training programs in diploma as per the government demand for the purpose of producing a development agent in plant science, while as a strategy placement of three development agents per Kebele level to contribute their share on achieving agricultural production and productivity in the country. From 2002 to 2011, trainees who passed the criteria set by the MoA and MoE and were given to the Ministry of Agriculture came to the college and studied their input based training program in diploma with plant science. The input based program was phased-out in 2011 and the new program was started in 2012 to train the trainees through outcome based training program to certify competent trainees with plant science.
In addition to offering regular programs, the department offers coffee, tea, and spice specialization programs from 2002 to 2006, a total of 963 trainees have graduated from the department. Currently, the department runs weekend, evening and summer programs in addition to regular training programs. Now the department is working to relaunch the specialization program in coffee, tea and spice with the collaboration of Ethiopia Coffee and Tea Authority in the near future.
To serve the community, the department of plant science has provided effective agricultural technologies with collaboration of technology offices are Mungbean, banana, coffee seedling, improved papaya, pineapple and improved avocado seedling. The department has research trials and agricultural technology adoption in the area of coffee vegetative production, Katila production and common bean.
Facilities
The department has well-equipped and organized laboratory, workshop, greenhouse, sprinkler and drip irrigation demonstration site, and research trial site in kosokol. Also in a kite site the department has a fruit orchard farm; a mother clonal coffee demonstration site, coffee and tea farm site, and in kosokol it has a coffee demonstration site, a coffee and fruit nursery site, field crop demonstration site, and spice demonstration in main campus and kite site.
